WWL-TV has an immediate opening for an Assistant News Director. We’ve spent more than 35 years as the highest-rated station in Southeast Louisiana. That has extended to our digital platforms, where we have the largest social media following among all media outlets in the market.
The successful candidate will be an experienced newsroom leader who can direct news coverage on broadcast as well as on our multiple digital and social media platforms. This management role calls for planning and overseeing daily coverage, understand and using data to shape editorial direction, and integrating our brand and marketing plans into newscasts. A key part of this position is working with producers, reporters, and managers to engage the audience with quality storytelling.
The Assistant News Director works with the News Director to: Build and execute long-term strategies and coverage plans; Take a leadership position during breaking news and severe weather; Assist in recruiting, interviewing, and evaluating potential employees; Provide feedback to reporting and producing staffs; Work on other special projects and assignments as directed.
The Assistant News Director will understand what it means to “own” the big story, win weather coverage, and be the market leader in enterprise reporting. People skills are a must—the Assistant News Director will have to work closely with other station departments to manage and solve challenges affecting the newsroom and news product. You will also perform the duties of the News Director in his absence.
Qualifications include a bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism preferred with a proven track record of news management experience, demonstrated successful innovative leadership, communication, and both staff and product development skills. Also required is at least three years management experience in broadcast news or related field and a solid journalistic judgment and a news’ philosophy that emphasizes accurate, fair and unique local content, along with community engagement. The successful candidate will have a leading understanding of social media and digital platforms. Strong ethical standards and integrity are a must along with exceptional organizational skills suited for a fast paced environment.
