Free Spirit Media Job Title: Production Coordinator, FSM News South Reports To: Program Coordinator, FSM News South Supervises: Youth Production Crews/Interns (as assigned) Summary The FSM News South Production Coordinator is a dynamic staff person who is able to work directly with youth to spark creativity, confidence, and leadership through journalism and video production. This staff person is a team player, who can maintain focus, perspective, attitude, and attention to detail in a fast-paced, creative, and youth-driven environment. The Production Coordinator, with support from the Program Coordinator, is responsible for supporting the technical needs and learning for the after school and summer program for youth on the South Side of Chicago. FSM News South is held at Gary Comer Youth Center on the South Side of Chicago and engages high school aged youth. The Production Coordinator will also be responsible for supporting the middle school program efforts and general organizational distribution efforts. Background Free Spirit Media (FSM) is a non-profit organization based in Chicago that cultivates diverse youth voices to transform media and society. FSM partners with schools and organizations to provide project-based learning experiences and workforce development to youth and young adults. Participants develop creative, technical, and communication skills as they produce documentary and dramatic videos, public service announcements, sports telecasts, and other media projects. FSM News teaches video production and journalism to youth, with a focus on supporting youth in learning the best practices in journalistic reporting, research, and broadcast news. Through production of news packages, PSAs, and full newscasts, youth gain real world skills and begin to use media as a way to tell their story and learn about their community. FSM News South is part of the journalism portfolio, with its counterpart FSM News West and the advanced journalism program, Real Chi Youth. The FSM News South crew is responsible for the production of 10-minute advanced newscasts every month, which air at the end of Free Spirit Media Presents on CAN TV Channel 19 (Saturdays from 8:00-10 p.m.). In addition, ABC7 features all of the FSM News shows on their community page. Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Program Responsibilities  Participate in day-to-day lesson preparation and delivery, including, but not limited to: camera operations, editing, producing, and reporting  Assist and teach youth on site about equipment, video editing, trouble-shooting, and production run-down  Develop curriculum to enhance youth technical and production skills  Lead peer critiques of each newscasts, incorporating areas of strength and growth for the crew  Create and maintain youth development environment where youth receive technical, artistic, social, and emotional support  Help plan, oversee, and attend field trips to media and production companies, businesses, organizations, events, etc.  Participate in FSM staff meetings and professional development trainings Technical/Production Responsibilities  Oversee production, editing and archiving of final newscasts  Responsible for the care, set-up/pack-up, and maintenance of camera, editing, and video equipment  Coordinate on-site filming of monthly newscasts, including equipment set-up and crew positions  Responsible for the care, set-up/pack-up, and maintenance of camera, editing, and video equipment  Lead the program’s file management and organizational system  Be knowledgeable in Final Cut X News on the Road Summer Program  Assist in leading youth crews in developing five News on the Road newscasts during the summer  Help coordinate access to News on the Road reporting locations throughout the summer  Oversee filming anchors script at each site, including coaching talent and set-up and tear down of cameras and teleprompter  Finalize editing and posting of each newscast Distribution Responsibilities  Contribute to Distribution Committee through quarterly meetings to coordinate an org-wide distribution strategy  Maintain distribution partnership with ABC 7 through regular submission of media and quarterly communication  Lead FSM's submission to about 35 film festivals each year, which requires familiarity with media produced across FSM and track in a spreadsheet  Maintain and cultivate relationship with PBS partnership in supporting youth in creating special news projects  Support youth in posting photos and updates to social media Qualifications, Education and/or Experience  Advanced knowledge of broadcast journalism production  Advanced editing skills  Knowledge of video production and post-production tools including use and maintenance of video cameras, lights, microphones, graphics, effects, Final Cut Pro  A minimum of two years video, film, or television experience  A minimum of two years related experience and/or training in a youth/community development organization or school  Ability to use effective and persuasive speech and writing in instruction, presentations, meetings, and site visits  Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university preferred Work Requirements This is a full-time position.
