The digital journalist compiles, edits and writes news stories from a variety of sources, including WRAL-TV, the Internet, social media, wire services and traditional news sources, with an emphasis on delivering breaking news quickly and accurately.
The digital journalist works to ensure that all WRAL digital channels – web, app, and social media – reflect the most up-to-date and compelling information for residents of the Triangle through the creation and curation of text and headlines, still images, audio, video, and web links to create an appealing and complete package. The digital journalist also is encouraged to report and write original multiplatform stories as time and schedules permit.
The digital journalist coordinates with television producers, reporters and managers to ensure online coverage is fresh and complete at all times.
The digital journalist is part of the team responsible for maximizing traffic to WRAL.com and related websites and mobile applications by identifying and highlighting the most important and engaging stories, videos and photos using real-time and historical analytics to understand audience behaviors.
The successful candidate should have a strong command of Associated Press style; news writing and editing experience; exceptional spelling and grammar skills and news judgment; familiarity with online content management systems and image and video editing software; and the ability to work quickly, accurately and independently under deadline pressure. WRAL.com is a 24/7 enterprise and the digital journalist can expect to work some early morning, late night, holiday, and weekend shifts.
A minimum of one year of related work experience and a writing test are required; a Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications or English is preferred. A pre-employment drug screening is required. EOE M/F. All Capitol Broadcasting Company properties are tobacco free.
