I. Job Summary | Major goals and objectives.
Special Projects Producer at Arizonaís Family CBS 5 & 3 TV (Meredith Corp.) is responsible for the coordinated production of special project-oriented newscasts. Utilizes creative, editorial, administrative and executive judgment to direct News Department and Station support staff in the production of compelling programming. May be responsible for other aspects of the overall news department operation on an ancillary basis. May handle and/or assist with assignments needed by Executive Producers and Assignment Desk.
Work performed is for all media platforms and initiatives, including for example: on-air, web, digital and social media.
II. Essential Job Functions
Accountabilities, Actions and Expected Measurable Results
Formats and provides sequential orders of stories for air utilizing editorial judgment. Determines segment length, story length and general content; uses editorial judgment in recommending and producing special segments which may depart from regular formats. Maintains responsibility for all newscast or special broadcast timing. Helps plan special event coverage.
Assigns stories to copy writers/editors with time and editorial content parameters. Reads and approves all news cast copy for acceptance; i.e objectivity, clarity, legal liability, story length and continuity with other aspects of the overall format. Screens and provides visual editing direction in instances of sensitive video.
Coordinates graphics selection and use of special video effects; formats and produces live shots, often under extreme competitive and logistical pressure (must maintain composure and leadership under pressure); provides editorial updates and on-air story content cues to Anchorpersons during live, breaking story coverage.
Works closely with newscast director trouble shooting and solving production problems during special events coverage.
Duties would include, but not limited to, working both in the studio and in the field. Accept assignments from Executive Producers and Assignment Desk. Write and produce stories. Edit stories for broadcast. Provide content for our multiple digital platforms and engage viewers through social media. Contribute initiative concepts and ideas on a regular basis. Develop and maintain contact with news sources. Propose ideas for hard news stories, follow-ups, features and new special.
May be responsible for additional operational/administrative functions as assigned.
III. Minimum Qualifications and Job Requirements | All must be met to be considered.
Bachelorís Degree in Journalism or related field, or equivalent training and/or experience.
Three years of experience as a news producer in a top 20 market.
One year of general on air-news reporting experience a plus.
Journalistic skills editorial judgment with knowledge of editing and photography skills, or equivalent work experience.
Specific Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Newsroom computer systems
Must be able to supervise, coach and motivate staff.
Ability to work under pressure, adapt to change, meet deadlines, work well as a team and independently. Exceptional communication skills and excellent knowledge of current events.
