Job Posting Title: KY3/KSPR Assistant News Director Department: KY3/KSPR News Reports To: KY3/KSPR News Director FLSA: Salary, exempt Status: Full-time (40+ hours per week) Location: KY3/KSPR, Springfield, MO Deadline to apply: July 2, 2019 KY3/KSPR, the high-rated, award-winning (60 so far this year) NBC, ABC and CW Gray station in Springfield, MO (market 72) is looking for the newest member of the news team. The assistant news director will be responsible for the day-to-day running of the newsroom; working closely with the digital director, assignment editor and executive producers. This person will help plan and coordinate daily news coverage on all platforms. He or she must have a passion for news and innovation and be able to mentor more than eleven MMJs daily by setting goals and encouraging them through the story process all the way through to the newscast and active live shots. The successful candidate must also guide producers through active, creative and impactful newscasts. He or she must be able to give quick and positive feedback, as well as hold people accountable for goals set by management. Must be able to “own” the big stories of the day, breaking news and especially weather coverage. Must be creative with different coverage ideas and help MMJs with creative storytelling. The assistant news director will also be responsible for the schedule, planning specials and special reports and helping plan the long-term strategy of the news department. Springfield, MO is one of the lowest cost-of-living cities in the nation (14% below the national average) and in the heart of the beautiful Ozark Mountains. Whether it’s hiking, boating, floating, or fishing, it’s all just a short drive away. A regional hub with large city amenities and small town hospitality, Springfield also has three universities, and two of the top 100 hospitals. We have physicians in every major specialty area. Plus, tourist destination Branson, MO is just a half-hour away. Qualifications: • Bachelor's degree in television, communication or journalism related field is preferred • Basic experience with cameras, ENPS, editing on Grass Valley Edius is a plus • Experience with managing staff during severe weather events is a plus • Must have experience with legal and ethical issues in the newsgathering process • The successful candidate will have had at least 5 years in broadcast journalism or equivalent. • Previous experience as an assistant news director or executive producer is required. Responsibilities: • Must believe in the power of local journalism and have excellent editorial judgement for weather, breaking news, safety/security and cost of living stories • Must be committed to managing compelling impact-driven weathercasts and newscasts • Aggressive during breaking news and in covering weather • Great people skills with emphasis on coaching, motivating and mentoring • Must be creative with on-air and digital coverage of stories • Help research, gather and check news stories for on-air and online in the most accurate, appealing, timely and creative way using all sources • Develop and maintain sources of information and knowledge about assignments, especially local and national news and weather • Enterprise research-driven packages under tight deadlines. Participate in story selection process through meetings. • Post and regularly update stories on social media and web. • Follow clothing and appearance guidelines • Must support the visual storyteller; help with creative stand-ups and explanatory, moving live shots • Be willing to learn or possess a broad and working knowledge of the viewing area, including people, places, things, and history • Critique, positive feedback, and training are part a must in this job; must be willing to coach and inspire on-air talent and producers • Perform other job-related duties as assigned • Must be able to handle several tasks at once • Must have flexibility to work any shift, including nights, weekends and holidays • Must be willing to learn producing and fill-in when given the opportunity. • Will run day-to-day operations of the newsroom with digital-first approach to news • Help plan special reports, promotions and other specials • Set schedule for news staff • Help with daily, weekly, monthly and yearly evaluations of news staff • Work closely with news director to write and achieve newsroom goals and policies • Assist news director with recruitment and hiring • Help plan training (internal and external) for newsroom staff Working Conditions: • Requires sitting 85% of the time and standing or walking 15% of the time, and some driving • Ability to carry, shoot and edit video with digital cameras • Outdoor work in all weather conditions may be required in this position • While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to stand, walk, talk, hear, use hands and fingers, reach, grab, handle or feel, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl, regularly sit, talk, and hear. • Some nights, weekends and holidays will be required. Schedule changes should be expected. • Occasional local and national travel is required Licensing Requirements: • Must hold a valid driver’s license/ability to obtain a Missouri license and be insurable.
