The University of Alabama is seeking a dynamic News Director for WVUA23 to develop and grow the news content of the station. WVUA23 is a service of the University of Alabama to the communities of West Alabama and a hands-on teaching laboratory for the College of Communication and Information Sciences. WVUA23 is headquartered in the University’s Digital Media Center, which includes Alabama Public Radio and the Center for Public Television. The position offers the opportunity to lead a team in the production of high impact local television and digital news, train a new generation of student journalists, and collaborate with colleagues on the creation of innovative, multi-platform programming. Primary duties include: (1) Develop and implement news strategy and business objectives in partnership with the college and DMC leadership; (2) Set the culture and tone of the news department, defining and maintaining ethical, legal, and journalistic standards; (3) Coordinate the news and information content across multiple platforms; (4) Manage the station’s on-air and digital news operations in accord with its vision, mission, values, and goals; (5) Recruit, interview, and hire newsroom employees and provide routine critiques of the product created; (6) Supervise the production of newscasts including story selection, presentation techniques and editorial decisions; (7) Work with all station departments to maximize efficiency, community response, viewership and revenue goals; and (8) Work with colleagues at the DMC and across campus in developing and producing programming for multiple distribution platforms; (9) mentor students and work with clinical faculty to develop effective student training programs, assisting in formal instruction as practical, and supporting graduating students in their future. WVUA23 engages consumers on multiple platforms with relevant and essential news, weather, sports and entertainment content for the communities of West Alabama, the Birmingham DMA and the larger University of Alabama community. Bachelor’s degree in broadcast communication, telecommunication and film, or journalism and six (6) years of news operations experience to include two (2) years of news personnel and operating budget management; OR master’s degree in broadcast communication, telecommunication and film, or journalism and four (4) years of news operations experience to include two (2) years of news personnel and operating budget management. Experience in formal teaching and mentoring is desirable. This position offers excellent health insurance, as well as retirement benefits.
