JOB SUMMARY: WJRT-TV/ABC12, the Allen Media Broadcasting ABC affiliate in Flint, has an opening for a full-time Sports Director/Anchor to anchor the sports segment during weeknight newscasts at 5, 6, and 11 p.m. THIS IS NOT AN ENTRY LEVEL POSITION We’re seeking candidates who have a well-rounded knowledge of covering collegiate, local, and professional sports; the ability to produce sportscasts and sports programming; and the ability to go beyond highlights and create thoughtful and relevant sports feature packages. We’re looking for a leader who ensures that all sports content meets company standards for journalistic integrity and production quality. Candidates should have a solid track record of covering sports teams and athletes, as well as proficiency in using Edius and new computer systems. This position also requires that the candidate be a self-starter, adaptable to change, and possess the ability to manage schedules, make story assignments, arrange travel, and manage sports content on website and other social media. The position will include occasional weekend shifts and requires the candidate to have the ability to travel. GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES: • Produces and presents sports reports for all platforms. • Writes and delivers sports stories in an exciting, captivating, and authentic manner that is clear and concise. • Assists in writing, editing, researching, and coordinating sports programming and other content as needed. • Responds to breaking sports events and other urgent newsroom situations as required. • Participates in promotional activities including public appearances. • Shoot videos for sports reports. • Maintains video equipment. • Edits video for television broadcasts and content. • Writes stories for the website and other social media platforms. • Interacts with viewers and users on social media sites. • Develops and cultivates relationships within the Community, local schools, and colleges to develop sources that allow you to break stories. • Performs special projects and other duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS: • Bachelor's degree in Broadcast Journalism, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and work-related experience. • Comprehensive knowledge of sports and sports-related activities. • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written with the ability to ad-lib when required. • Superior on-air presence with at least 3+ years as Sports Anchor/Reporter at a commercially licensed station • Supervising experience guiding, directing, and motivating others. • Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize assignments, and handle multiple tasks simultaneously. • An ability to effectively listen to fully understand problems and communicate with a team to shape a solution. • Write and post daily on all digital platforms including social media. • Possess and maintain a valid driver's license with a good driving record. • Operate news-gathering vehicles to and from various locations. • An Ability to develop story ideas, write, shoot, and edit sports/news stories for on-air broadcasting. • Flexibility to work any shift. • Ability to work under extreme deadline pressure and respond to late changes (be fluid). You must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license in good standing.
