JOB SUMMARY: WJRT has an opening for a full-time Sports Anchor/Reporter to report the Sports segment during the week and Anchor on weekends. If you want to read highlights, this is not the job for you. We are looking for a good storyteller. Someone who is passionate about covering the people and stories behind the highlights. THIS IS NOT AN ENTRY LEVEL POSITION. The select candidate is capable of anchoring, reporting, writing, producing, planning, story generation, web posting, videography and editing, and producing news stories from inception to completion professionally, as assigned, via our various and growing media channels, and all on deadline. WJRT is seeking a candidate who is motivated and energetic! Has ability to channel that energy on local/collegiate sports. Carry out the vision of the Sports Director for sportscasts and sports programming; and the ability to go the extra mile and highlight sports packages. Possess a strong sports broadcast coverage background. Requires and individual to be able to switch gears quickly. Travel is necessary for this position. The position includes working weekend and holidays. The select candidate must demonstrate flexibility in the newsroom and on-air and present an energetic personality while delivering the news. Duties include TV & online news stories that are professionally complete and compelling, anchor newscasts as assigned, present stories calmly and clearly and in a live capacity, appear at promotional functions, operate news equipment in a safe, professional manner, support news promotion, contribute regularly to news coverage and perform duties as assigned. He/she must also be a champion for online and social media efforts during a critical part of the day for our viewers. GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES: • Writes and delivers sports stories in a clear and concise manner. • Assists Sports Director in writing/editing/researching/coordinating sports programming and other content. • Responds to breaking sports events and other urgent newsrooms situations as required. • Works closely with the Sports Director in developing sports coverage. • Participates in promotional activities including public appearances. • Performs special projects and other duties as assigned. • Set up/execute video live shots for sports • Maintains sports video equipment. • Edits video for television broadcasts and content. • Writes stories for the website and other social media platforms. • Interacts with viewers and users on social media sites. • Appear at various community events that may occur outside normal shift • Make public appearances on behalf of the station acting as an ambassador for the company. • Must maintain professional appearance • Develop and cultivate sources • Solid understanding of legal and ethical issues impacting journalism • Post and interact on multiple social media platforms Working directly with the news team to build out our coverage and make it meaningful and relatable to our viewers. The person we hire must have a positive attitude and be an ambassador for the station by making personal appearances at community events. Writing compelling stories. Shooting and editing video. Live reporting in studio or in the field. Update social media accounts. Must be able to work under extreme deadlines pressure and respond to late changes. Be available for unscheduled assignments on morning, nights, weekends and holidays as assigned by News Management. QUALIFICATIONS: • Bachelor's degree in Broadcast Journalism, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and work related experience. • Comprehensive knowledge of sports and sports related activities. • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written with the ability to ad lib when required. • Superior on-air presence with at least 3+ years in Sports Reporting/Anchoring • Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize assignments and handle multiple tasks simultaneously. • Write and post daily on all digital platforms including social media. • Possess and maintain a valid driver's license with a good driving record. • Develop story ideas, write, shoot and edit sports/news stories for on-air broadcasting. • Write in an exciting, captivating and authentic manner. • Use the latest editing and photography tools to tell great stories. • Develop original content through social listening and independent sources. • Deliver on-air news events in an engaging, exciting, and accurate manner. -Deliver on-air news events in an engaging, exciting, and accurate manner. • Interview news subjects and research for facts and credibility. • Develop sources that allow you to break stories. • Operate news gathering vehicle to and from various locations. • Ability to work under extreme deadline pressure and respond to late changes (be fluid). • Interview news subjects and research for facts and credibility. • Develop sources that allow you to break stories. • Operate news gathering vehicle to and from various locations. • Flexibility to work any shift including weekends. The hours, shifts, responsibilities are flexible and are subject to change at the News Directors discretion. Must have a reliable source of transportation and be flexible on hours.
