JOB SUMMARY: The Assistant News Director assists the News Director with all aspects of news, weather, and sports programming production, and serves as the News Director in his/her absence. Assist in overseeing and leading all aspects of daily news operations including organization of targeted content; analyze audience research; work effectively with creative services, sales, production, and other departments. In conjunction with the News Director creates a productive and energetic work environment with clear communication, accountability, high journalistic standards and instill strong teamwork. Ability to foster positive, innovative, hard charging newsroom. Coordinate breaking news, weather, and large event coverage while effectively planning news strategies for continuous measurement. Hands-on leader who can grow ratings and grow content on all platforms. Excellent judgement skills, high ethical standards, and practices, who has demonstrated success in helping mentor and grow emerging journalists. GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES: • Assist in managing all aspects of News Department including recruit, coach, train, inspire, and mentor. • Assist in planning, staffing, training, scheduling, performance evaluations for the News Department. • Consults on decisions regarding hiring, evaluations, promotion and termination of employees • Critiques newscasts daily to correct errors, improve coverage and provide mentoring feedback to news staff. • Works with the News Director to cultivate a culture that owns enterprising reporting & breaking news across all content platforms. • Implement strategic goals/plans and compelling content. • Analyze and respond to trends affecting the industry and DMA. • Monitor all on-air & online product for compliance to Federal, State, and local laws as well as First & Fourteenth Amendments. • Work closely with other members of station management team to develop and attain departmental and station goals. • Knowledge of and proficiency in posting content to station websites. • Assist in executing the brand and grow audience on all platforms. • Strong commitment to teamwork, empowerment, and open and honest, servant leadership. • Plan and execute "big event' coverage. • Responds to coverage questions. • Well versed with the latest technological advancements in news gathering and production, libel and privacy laws, journalistic ethics, and maintaining professional guidelines and standards of news broadcasts. • Ability to effectively listen to fully understand employee needs and communicate with a team to shape a solution. • High level of judgement and solid leadership skills to motivate staff. • Responsible for executing newsroom philosophy and policies, and its vision and direction; • Leads editorial meetings and manages the daily flow of content to the station’s various platforms • Performs other duties as assigned. REQUIREMENTS: • 4-year Degree in Broadcast Journalism, or equivalent combination of education and work-related experience. • 3+ years of news management experience. • 3+ of producing news. • Servant leader, veteran TV, and Digital newsroom manager. • Effective verbal and written communicator. • Must have working knowledge of journalistic ethics, libel, and privacy laws. • Integrity, creativity, passion, compassion, positive energy, active listener, engaging personality. • A broad-based knowledge of journalism and related standards, the news media environment and audience consumption trends. • Assist in supervising and provide regular feedback, performance appraisals for direct reports. • Exceptional time management skills, can-do attitude, excellent work ethic. • Broad understanding of newsroom operations and equipment • Proven and effective leadership skills; foster open dialogue, empower others, address conflicts quickly and directly. • Knowledge and understanding of ratings system. • Ensure flawless execution.
