Job Summary: As the Assistant News Director, you will play a vital role in supporting the News Director in overseeing all aspects of news, weather, and sports programming production. In the absence of the News Director, you will step in to lead. This position involves managing daily news operations, strategizing targeted content, analyzing audience engagement, and working collaboratively with creative services, sales, production, and other departments. Together with the News Director, you will foster a positive and energetic work environment that emphasizes clear communication, accountability, high journalistic standards, and strong teamwork. You will also coordinate breaking news and significant event coverage while implementing strategies for continuous improvement. We are looking for a hands-on leader who is committed to enhancing ratings and expanding content across all platforms, while demonstrating sound judgment, high ethical standards, and a commitment to mentoring emerging journalists. General Responsibilities: Manage various aspects of the News Department by recruiting, coaching, inspiring, and mentoring the team. Collaborate in planning staffing, training, scheduling, and performance evaluations. Participate in decision-making regarding hiring, evaluations, promotions, and terminations. Provide constructive critiques of daily newscasts to enhance coverage, correct errors, and offer feedback to staff. - Work alongside the News Director to nurture a culture of innovative reporting and effective breaking news coverage across all content platforms. Help create and implement strategic goals and compelling content. Analyze industry trends and respond to developments in the Designated Market Area (DMA). Ensure all on-air and online products comply with federal, state, and local laws, as well as First and Fourteenth Amendment standards. Collaborate closely with fellow management team members to develop and achieve departmental and station goals. Possess expertise in posting content to the station's websites. Actively participate in executing branding strategies and expanding the audience across all platforms. Foster teamwork, empowerment, and a culture of open, honest, servant leadership. Plan and execute coverage for significant events. - Address inquiries regarding coverage promptly. Qualifications: Strong familiarity with the latest technological advancements in news gathering and production, as well as libel and privacy laws, journalistic ethics, and professional standards in broadcasting. Ability to listen actively and understand employee needs, facilitating effective communication and problem-solving. Demonstrated judgment and leadership skills to motivate and guide staff. Uphold and communicate the newsroom's philosophy and policies, shaping its vision and direction. Lead editorial meetings and manage the daily flow of content across various platforms. Be prepared to undertake additional responsibilities, as necessary. Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism or a related field, or a combination of equivalent education and experience. Minimum of 3 years of experience in news management Minimum of 3 years of experience producing newscasts. Proven ability to serve as a servant leader within the TV and digital newsroom environment. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Strong understanding of journalistic ethics, libel, and privacy laws. Key traits include integrity, creativity, passion, compassion, positive energy, active listening, and engaging personality. Comprehensive knowledge of journalism standards, news media dynamics, and audience trends. Assist in supervising staff, providing regular feedback, and conducting performance appraisals for direct reports. Exceptional time management skills, proactive demeanor, and a strong work ethic. - Solid understanding of newsroom operations and equipment. Effective leadership skills to promote open dialogue, empower team members, and address conflicts directly. Familiarity with the ratings system for broadcasting Ensure consistent and flawless execution of responsibilities.
